Research and Knowledge Transfer Strategy: 2009–15

The University’s Research and Knowledge Transfer Strategy provides the foundation for further strengthening the University’s international research profile.

As a research-intensive university, Birmingham is committed to carrying out research that is world-leading in terms of its originality and distinctiveness, significance and rigour.

The University aspires to be recognised internationally for research that is agenda-setting and for transferring our research outcomes to ensure positive impacts on culture and society, human health, the economy and environment.

We aim to build on individual excellence and to capitalise on our distinctive multi- and inter-disciplinary research strengths to address key national and global challenges, recognising that the complexity of these requires the productive bringing together of different perspectives and skills.

Vision and intent

Assessed in terms of its research and knowledge transfer, the University’s underpinning strategic intent is that:

By 2015 the University of Birmingham will hold a secure place among the top 50 universities in the world, and among the top 10 UK universities, through the pursuit and delivery of leading-edge, distinctive and innovative knowledge generation and transformation within an internationally excellent and exciting research environment.

Our research and knowledge transfer strategy and our learning and teaching strategy are, and must continue to be, inherently related. Our research-excellence will continue to underpin the content and delivery of all our teaching programmes – undergraduate and postgraduate.

Our vision is to inspire today’s students to make a major impact on global society and to become the leaders of tomorrow in whatever field they pursue.

Our vision of a research-intensive and globally competitive University is one where the transfer of knowledge and technology generated from our research into the economy, policy and society is an embedded and natural component of our activity, as important and relevant as the knowledge generation itself.

We support knowledge transfer as a broad spectrum of activity. From dissemination of the knowledge generated to our peers, national and international policy-makers, industry and commerce, and our local community and society more broadly through to commercialisation of our research.

The Strategy, its implementation and impact, will be monitored and reviewed annually by the Research and Knowledge Transfer Committee, which will report on progress to the University Executive Board and to the University Senate.
